This example of the nude, was more about being ‘creative’ rather than drawing academically. Once you can draw with confidence, including achieving correct proportions, then you can experiment and try new approaches to drawing and painting the model. I usually introduce members to a number of drawing exercises – expressive drawing techniques – to allow them to think out of the box. Otherwise artists will simply work in a very representational way, almost photographic, which is fine. But when you start to work in a more creative, expressive way, suddenly art opens up before you. The above image has elements of Henry Moore sculpture. And, remember, he did many sketches, drawings before committing to the finished piece.
